WESTFIELD , Ind. (AP) — Andrew Luck felt like a different guy as he strolled down the tree-lined path to the Colts practice field Thursday. The recently married quarterback and now expectant father made the short trek, confident in his surgically repaired right shoulder and football future. And despite being limited to individual drills by a strained left calf as training camp opened, even the Indianapolis Colts quarterback took a few moments to reflect on how much has changed since he first appeared at Grand Park Sports Campus last July.“I remember walking through that sort of tunnel in the trees. Today I was sitting there thinking about it and how scared I was to go practice and how nervous I was,” Luck said.“I had no idea what the heck was going to happen on this practice field. I remember it being a very powerful feeling and then feeling so happy and almost relieved like I’d survived. Survived practice. My arm is still attached to my shoulder. That’s certainly a much different feeling this year.”Those initial fears gradually dissipated with a steady progression of successful steps — proving to himself the throwing arm could withstand the NFL rigors, leading the Colts back from a 1-5 start to end a three-year playoff drought and eventually winning the league’s Comeback Player of the Year award. Now Luck begins this season with another light workload. In 2016, team officials rested Luck as part of an effort to protect the sore shoulder he initially injured in September 2015. After opting for surgery on the still-ailing shoulder in January 2017, Luck missed all of training camp — and the entire season. Last year, Luck slowly returned with coach Frank Reich and general manager Chris Ballard closely monitoring Luck’s passing totals at camp to assure he’d be healthy for the season opener. It worked. This time, it’s different.Instead of talking about his arm, Luck has spent much of the offseason answering questions about the leg injury that kept him out of all of the team’s offseason workouts this spring, prevented him from working out with his teammates on the West Coast between June and July and now has limited his work early in camp.Luck threw Thursday in individual drills and is expected to return to seven-on-seven work Friday. Reich said Luck’s injury would be evaluated each day and hopes his starting quarterback is back in full action by early next week. But with their preseason opener two weeks away and their regular-season opener more than six weeks away, nobody at Colts camp is panicked. Instead, they’re playing it safe.“When you don’t go the whole spring, I just think it’s the smart thing to do,” Reich said. “We’ve got plenty of time. He’s working hard Christine Michael Sr Jersey , he’s dialed in and he’ll get plenty of reps out here.”Besides, the Colts have a pretty good idea of how Luck will play once he is healthy. In his first season under Reich, Luck set career highs in attempts (630), completions (430), completion rate (67.3 percent) and quarterback rating (98.7) while being sacked a career-low 18 times. He flirted with career highs in yards passing (4,593) and touchdown passes (39) and finished with the second-lowest interception rate (2.34 percent) of his career. He played in all 16 games for the first time since 2014 when he led the Colts to the AFC championship game, engineered a six-win improvement over 2017 and made his fourth Pro Bowl appearance. The Colts encouraged Luck to take some well-deserved time off following their divisional-round loss to Kansas City, but sometime before the start of OTAs, Luck injured his lower left leg.So he spent the spring studying playbooks, watching game tape and demonstrating his mastery of Reich’s offense by explaining what he liked and didn’t like last season, discussing adjustments and what could be changed in 2019.“He had input last year, but it’s not even close to the same level. We were installing it and it was more listening with a few comments here and there,” Reich said.“I think it has taken the meetings to a higher level and even when it’s the quarterback meetings with (offensive coordinator) Nick (Sirianni), (quarterbacks coach) Marcus (Brady) and myself, but even in the offensive meetings. The voice he has in there making sure he is talking to receivers Pat McAfee Color Rush Jersey , tight ends, backs. He has had a real strong presence this offseason.”And it should give the Colts a leg up on their competition when Luck returns.“You can go to bed saying, ‘I wish I didn’t pull my calf. I wish I didn’t feel like this,” Luck said. “I know anybody coming back from any type of injury, it’s the same thing. You’ve got to keep working and getting better and trust that.” CINCINNATI — With a plucky showing by their backups, the Colts wrapped up an unsettling preseason and moved on from Andrew Luck. Now, it’s time for the rested regulars to see what they can do without their longtime leader.A pair of quarterbacks who were low on the depth chart before Luck’s retirement led Indianapolis to a 13-6 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals on Thursday night, the Colts’ only preseason win.Luck retired a week earlier after a 27-17 loss to Chicago, frustrated by his inability to get healthy. His postgame announcement severely dented the Colts’ playoff chances and elevated Jacoby Brissett — 4-11 as a starter with Indianapolis — to lead the offense.Brissett had a lot of company as he watched from the sideline Thursday. There were large swaths of empty seats as both teams rested their starters and key backups for the final preseason game. For the Colts, it was a chance to assess Brissett’s backups.“We’re evaluating all options as you would expect,” coach Frank Reich said. “That’ll play out the next couple of days.”Chad Kelly must serve a two-game suspension for violating the league’s personal conduct policy. He started and scrambled 7 yards for a touchdown in the first half, going 13 of 16 for 138 yards with an interception on an underthrown pass.Kelly signed with the Colts in May after pleading guilty to a second-degree trespassing charge. He was arrested last October after entering the home of someone he didn’t know following a Halloween party.Phillip Walker, who spent the past two seasons on the Colts’ practice squad, played the second half and was 8 of 16 for 90 yards.Third-round pick Parris Campbell made his debut and caught three passes for 42 yards. He missed most of training camp and the first three preseason games with a hamstring injury. His 31-yard catch and run set up Kelly’s touchdown scramble.“I felt like myself again,” Campbell said. “Those are plays I’m used to making.”The Bengals rested Andy Dalton and backup Ryan Finley , a fourth-round pick who won the No. 2 job with his strong showings in the first three preseason games. Jake Dolegala played the entire game and was 28 of 43 for 254 yards.Bengals first-year coach Zac Taylor used one word to describe the preseason: “Necessary.”The Bengals’ starting offense was erratic during a 1-3 preseason while adjusting to a new playbook.“There were times we showed flashes we have the ability to score points,” tight end C.J. Uzomah said. “At certain times, it’s the preseason, we needed to work out the kinks.”ONLY WINThe Colts avoided their first winless preseason since 2014, when they eventually lost to New England in the AFC championship game.NO SHOWSThe Bengals distributed 35,247 tickets for the game, the smallest crowd for any of the 28 preseason games between the Colts and Bengals. The previous low was 39,520 for the fourth preseason game last year, when the Colts also played at Paul Brown Stadium.NICE DEBUTCampbell was targeted four times and had three catches. His 42 yards receiving led the team.“It was great for his confidence,” Reich said. “He looked good. It was really good for him to get out there and get a half of football in.”OFF TARGETCincinnati’s Tristan Vizcaino made field goals of 22 and 38 yards, but he hit the left upright on a 55-yard try and was wide left from 37 yards. Indianapolis’ Cole Hedlund was good from 30 and 36 yards, and he was wide right from 45 yards.SEEKING FIRST WINThe Bengals lost both of their home preseason games under Taylor. His first chance to get a home regular-season win will be Sunday, Sept. 15 against San Francisco. Cincinnati plays three of its first four games on the road.FRUSTRATIONG FINISH FOR BENGALSThe Bengals had a 6-yard touchdown pass wiped out by an offensive pass interference on Mason Schreck with 4:01 left. The drive ended with Quinton Flowers dropped for a loss on fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard line.INJURIESColts: WR Marcus Johnson sustained a concussion in the third quarter after he was hit hard on a 17-yard catch.Bengals: Rookie RB Rodney Anderson hurt his right knee in the first half and didn’t return. The sixth-round pick missed most of last season at Oklahoma with a knee injury. … LB Malik Jefferson was ill and didn’t play.UP NEXTColts: Open at the Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 8.Bengals: Open at Seattle on Sept. 8.52<button class="view-gallery">View Gallery</button> Gallery:Greetings from Westfield: Colts training camp 2019AP | Copyright The Associated Press.
